The structural scope included load and stress analysis, web member design, and specifications for materials and construction methods, with engineering reports and compliance documentation prepared to support regulatory approval. In parallel, the mechanical design addressed review comments and incorporated a steam piping layout with necessary valves and schedules, a well-coordinated makeup air system with air quantity calculations, and a detailed mechanical roof plan indicating exhaust and intake clearances. Roof penetration details for ductwork were also provided to optimize integration with the building envelope.

Electrical and plumbing systems were designed for efficiency and compliance, with power and control circuit routing, detailed panel schedules, and clearly marked power sources for panel boards and disconnects. The plumbing scope optimized water supply and drainage layouts while maximizing the reuse of existing piping where feasible. A gas piping layout was developed, detailing fixture locations and load calculations to ensure reliable performance. The mechanical design included detailed heating and cooling load calculations using HAP software, along with duct layout planning and ventilation schedules per IMC Table 403.3.1.1. The Burt ADU project involves the construction of a new 564.7 square foot, single-story, onebedroom

accessory dwelling unit (ADU) in the rear yard of an existing single-family home in Costa

Mesa, California. The project includes the preparation of comprehensive mechanical, electrical, and

plumbing (MEP) plans to support the development of this new ADU.

The MEP scope for this project covers a range of key features. The mechanical system design will

provide ventilation and air conditioning, with options for either a central air handler and heat pump

or ductless mini-split units. The electrical system design includes lighting, power, and dedicated

circuits for major appliances such as the air conditioner, range, and EV charger. Additionally, the

existing 100-amp electrical panel will be upgraded to a 200-amp service. The plumbing system

design addresses the ADU’s water supply, drainage, and a central domestic hot water system, with

connections to either the municipal sewer system or a private septic system.

Finally, the project involves coordinating with local utility providers for power, water, and sewer

connections, as well as preparing permit-ready MEP plans that address any city comments or

requirements. The MEP design will be tailored to meet all relevant building codes and the specific

needs and preferences of the client for this new ADU.

The Nob Hill Residential project, located on Nob Hill Ave in Pinole, CA, represents a significant advancement in modern structural design, particularly with the integration of Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs). Our team undertook a comprehensive structural design that included a pivotal modification of the first-level walls from traditional concrete masonry units (CMU) to cast-in-place concrete, enhancing both the durability and aesthetic appeal of the structure. This design choice not only increases the building’s resilience but also aligns with contemporary architectural trends. 

Our scope of work encompassed detailed calculations and analyses to ensure the safety and stability of the structure. We conducted thorough loading analyses, including assessments for wind, dead, and live loads, which informed our engineering report. The project involved extensive structural analysis and design calculations covering all components, from foundations and walls to beams, stairs, and more. GDI Engineering successfully completed a civil engineering project at 4126 W Clayton Ave, Los Angeles, CA, focusing on a surface area of 2,362 square feet. The project showcased our expertise in delivering comprehensive civil engineering solutions, including advanced drainage design, stormwater management, and compliance documentation. This project emphasized sustainable and efficient water management through innovative design techniques tailored to the unique requirements of the site. 

Our scope of work encompassed the analysis and design of a comprehensive stormwater drainage system, featuring an underground detention tank, a rain garden, and Low Impact Development (LID) solutions. We designed and implemented ABS or HDPE pipe sections for optimal stormwater flow, as well as a sump pump system to enhance drainage efficiency. Additionally, we conducted thorough detention design computations, ensuring compliance with local regulations and environmental standards.
